Bulk SMS: It’s the New Black

May 28, 2010

Should bulk SMS be a default part of customer communications? Sure, we think so – but there are others, too…

Nearly 90% of the global population has mobile phone coverage. Global mobile penetration is at 67% as measured at the end of 2009 (via Voice & Data). Why is this important information for any business out there that wants to communicate with its customers?

Most, if not all, mobile phones are capable of sending and receiving SMS text messages. In fact, there are more people that have access to, own and use a mobile phone than there are people using the internet or even own a computer, never mind the mobile web. Quite interesting and also the reason why more and more businesses are turning to bulk SMS for their client communication needs.

Best of all is the fact that bulk SMS makes the perfect companion for other forms of communication. Said Ed Henrich on a report published on GlobalGold that discusses the combination of bulk SMS and email, “integration of the two channels was proving highly beneficial for many brands”. And it’s true, too. Look at the people you do business with – more and more of them are going the bulk SMS route, and here’s why:

  • It’s a very short form of communication
  • Delivery is immediate
  • Delivery is on a device that is more often than not carried
  • Delivery is to a personal device, which means that more attention is given to the content of that message because it’s on the mobile phone.

And, perhaps most important of all, is the fact that customers are beginning to expect bulk SMS communication from those companies they invest in – it’s information they have an interest in, delivered to a device they love.
