International SMS for U.S. Freelancers

March 12, 2010

Use international SMS to stimulate business and communicate with clients all around the world.

So you’ve got a couple of clients around the world and are doing pretty good using online forms of communication that include email, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Not bad.

But as you may know, a big part of freelancing is all about providing that degree of excellence that will ensure that your customers keep you in mind for all those future freelance jobs.

After all, I don’t know if you have noticed, but it would seem as if the amount of freelancers in circulation is increasing, which means the competition is probably increasing, too. Can international SMS provide you with that needed edge to stand the test of time?

You Need to Up Your Game

So let’s look at a couple of benefits associated with the use of international SMS as a freelancer.

First off, keep in mind  that the mobile is a very personal device. In fact, it is a very unique device; it’s customizable and lets you carry the whole world (almost there) in your pocket. And if you are doing it, then chances are that your clients are doing it too…

  • Mobile subscriptions are set to reach 5 billion at the end of the year.
  • Almost 50% of Americans sleep with their mobile phones close to them.
  • More than 60% of Americans keep their phones with them at all times, even when at home.

And the above trends aren’t much different in the rest of the world.

But it’s not really about how often the mobile is carried around or where it is kept, is it? That’s just a part of the equation. The real question is: How much do your current and prospective customers rely on SMS at this very moment? Well, we’d like to say “a lot”, but why take our word for it? Here’s what the Nielsen Company had to say:

Nielsen Mobile Stats

Pretty conclusive: SMS is the main form of mobile communication used in virtually all countries around the globe, with its closest mobile application competitor, well, not really close.

How You Can Use International SMS in Your Business

That being said, let’s brainstorm a couple of ways how international SMS can help you increase your business functionality as well as a relationship with your clients.

Business Communication

  • Immediate Contact
  • Confirming Deadlines
  • Project Status Reports
  • Project Completion Reports
  • Billing Notifications
  • Account Reminders
  • Quotes
  • Invoice summaries

Marketing

  • Notifications of promotional material
  • Special offer promotions
  • Vouchers & Coupons for discounts

The benefit of using the above over existing online technologies such as email, social networking or micro-blogging, is that no internet connection is necessary; you’ll be able to get in touch with your current and prospective clients wherever there’s a mobile signal using international SMS.

From our side, the only thing we’d like you to keep in mind is the fact that, if it’s 2PM where you are, it might be 2AM where your client is – sending your clients international SMS messages while they’re dreaming about sipping sun-downers on a Hawaiian beach might not be the best move in the long run.

Other than that, international SMS is the tool to give you that extra special freelance advantage.
