SMS gateways open up the mobile world

August 14, 2009

Text messaging through an SMS gateway is an effective and affordable way for US businesses, both large and small, to expand their business reach, increase their revenue and build awareness of their brands.

SMS gateways facilitate the transmission of text messages from a variety of devices: mobile phones, software applications, landline telephones and email servers. They offer any US business the immediate capability to send and receive text messages. The appropriate connection to an SMS gateways is dependent on existing infrastructure, as well as the mobile messaging needs and goals of the business. There are a variety of add-on options once the correct connection to the SMS gateway is established.

Connections to the SMS gateways are facilitated by application programming interfaces (API’s) that ‘translate’ the different programming languages and protocols used by servers, networks and manufacturers into text messages that can be understood by the receiving mobile network. These simple API’s are designed for easy integration with any system.

Customers who already have emailing servers in place may prefer to use SMTP connections to connect to the SMS gateway and send their email as a text message. The SMTP communication protocol is perfect for bulk text message sending and is the industry standard for ‘email-to-SMS’ messaging. It doesn’t however support 2 way SMS so another connection using a different API, such as HTTP(S), is necessary to receive messages. FTP SMS gateway connections are best for once off, high volume messaging, allowing customers to upload text files to the FTP site and then have the files automatically dispatched to message recipients.

Organizations wanting to send triggered, real-time text messages can connect to SMS gateways through HTTP/S API’s; a connection that overcomes most firewall problems. If developers are working in windows-based programming environment, they can also look at COM Object API’s, that support extended length messages and are compatible with any COM-enabled program. SMPP API connections to SMS gateways are robust and suitable for customers who need to send large volumes of text messages.

SMS gateways allow you to manage an assortment of API connections, manage and monitor your campaigns and track the delivery of your text messages. SMS gateways providers will supply script libraries, API documentation and the best provide 24/7 technical backup support.

U.S. businesses and organizations looking to go mobile should be exploring the options offered by an SMS gateway.
